At Yaklin Ford, your Richwood Ford Dealer we are proud to serve the community by providing dependable Ford vehicles. Ford continues to innovate and be a leader of technological advancements. On such advancement is the self-driving car. Recently, Ford teamed up with Domino’s Pizza to test a self-driving car for pizza delivery.
Part of this study is to investigate customer interaction between vehicle and customer. While self-driving cars are not in the immediate future for deliveries, they can provide certain interactions that normally would not be tested.
“As delivery experts, we’ve been watching the development of self-driving vehicles with great interest as we believe transportation is undergoing fundamental, dramatic change,” said Patrick Doyle, Domino’s president and CEO. “We pride ourselves on being technology leaders and are excited to help lead research into how self-driving vehicles may play a role in the future of pizza delivery. This is the first step in an ongoing process of testing that we plan to undertake with Ford.”
The testing took place in a semi-controlled environment called Mcity. Mcity is an urbanized area built by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This is used as a controlled area to test the self-driving car's capabilities. Testing went well enough to where the next phase of the testing commenced. This stage is where a Ford Fusion is driven by a Ford engineer. The engineer is recording reactions from patrons as they retrieve pizza from the Heatwave Compartment™.
So far, with all the success this has gone through, Ford is planning to start producing self-driving vehicles by 2021.
